CAMPAIGNING residents say their efforts have paid off as work begins on 56 affordable homes on the Ings estate.

As part of the Government's Affordable Homes Programme, homes will be built in Mitcham Road and Bellfield Avenue in east Hull.

Hull City Council and Chevin Housing Association have teamed up to deliver the £5m project.

It follows years of campaigning from the estate's residents.

Mike Thompson, 59, of Barley Road, is chairman of the residents' association and said members were always optimistic and regularly met with councillors.

He said: "Schools got involved and wrote letters to the Government and it has all paid off now the work is finally starting.

"We will have finally achieved our goal when people move in."

Stella Betts, 73, of Camberwell Way, moved into a new bungalow before funding was cut for social housing.

She said: "A lot of the old properties are in a terrible state and people are desperate to move.

"I moved from a property across the road with my husband, Thomas, six years ago and the bungalow is excellent. It has really improved our quality of life. It's important we move forward with the plans."

The homes will be decked out with the latest in green technology and should be finished next summer.

Councillor John Black, portfolio holder for strategic and operational housing, said the project forms part of a wider plan to build 800 homes on the Ings site.

"It marks the continuation of the regeneration within this priority area," he said.

"The development will provide high-quality and environmentally friendly homes for residents affected by the Ings Transition Renewal Acquisition and Demolition programme."

The first development comprises eight two-bedroom houses, 33 three-bedroom houses, five bungalows and ten four-bedroom homes.

Caroline Grosvenor, head of Chevin Housing Association, said it is committed to developing properties to try to meet the shortage of affordable housing in the city.

She said: "We're delighted to be working in partnership with the council to build these fantastic new homes in Ings as part of our ongoing regeneration service."
