TOMMY Coyle says the nature of his latest victory proves he has the power to be a big success in the lightweight division.
Coyle scored a fourth-round stoppage against Jay Morris at Blackpool's Winter Gardens to capture the 15th win of his professional career.
Giving away over a stone against a boxer who usually competes in the light-middleweight division, Coyle had been expected to win, but not as convincingly as he did.
"It was really encouraging for me and while I always felt confident I'd get the win, I didn't expect it to be like that," Coyle told the Mail.
"It was a controlled performance and I felt so confident in there. I was told in the dressing room before the fight to box smart, and not take any chances against someone so much bigger than me.
"But as the fight went on I could see I was hurting him. To get a light-middleweight out of the ring like that proves I'm punching strong and has given me a great lift."
Starting in his customary fashion, the 23-year-old set a blistering pace in the first round and had Morris in trouble as he struggled to cope with Coyle's relentless speed.
Two cut eyes began to cause Morris problems as the fight progressed, but it was Coyle's fierce body shot in the fourth round which ended the fight.
"I'd worked with my trainer Jamie Moore on that particular body shot, so for that to work as good as it did was very pleasing for both of us," added Coyle.
"Jamie told me a left hand shot through the middle would open up Morris' right side and it did. I did everything Jamie told me to do and it paid off, so I have to say a big thank you to him."
Coyle recently switched camps, leaving behind former trainer Stevie Smith to set-up with Manchester-based Moore.
The initial plan was for the former British and European champion to help Coyle train for his now cancelled British title fight with Martin Gethin.
Coyle says what initially was meant to be a short-term partnership now looks like being permanent.
"I spoke to Jamie after the fight to thank him for all his help and it looks like he's going to stick with me and keep training me, which is great news," said Coyle.
"We've got a really good team and I feel settled in with Jamie and there is no doubt I've learned a lot in the last few weeks."
