A COUPLE have told how their son died from a hidden heart condition after dancing to pop song Gangnam Style.

Lee Michael Whitehead, 20, was partying with friends when he collapsed on the dancefloor at the Half Moon pub in Market Weighton.

He was a "ticking time bomb", the inquest heard, as doctors only discovered after his death he had been suffering from cardiomyopathy.

Lee's mother Lisa said she found comfort in the fact her son died while he was having fun, dancing to one of his favourite chart songs.

Mrs Whitehead said: "He was always making people laugh and had so many friends.

"Lee just loved life and was very funny, he even dressed up as a woman once to entertain people.

"He loved to mess about but he was also very helpful and a hard worker."

Lisa, 41, said her son was a devoted godfather to one-year-old Mia Allinson, his friend Shannon's daughter.

Lee, of Dee Street in west Hull, worked with his dad Richard as a production operative at Montracon trailer factory in Market Weighton.

He left work on December 21, and went out drinking with friends and colleagues to celebrate the start of his Christmas break.

At 7.30pm on the Friday night, he was dancing with two girls at the Half Moon when he collapsed.

Emma Louise Brown, who was dancing alongside him, said she thought he was "play acting" when he dropped to the ground.

She said: "I'd known him since school in Market Weighton and just thought he was doing some kind of dance move on the floor.

"Then I realised he wasn't moving and there was blood on his nose. "That's when I knew something was seriously wrong.

"I used my handbag for a head support and people were helping him while they waited for the ambulance to arrive."

While pub-goers performed CPR in a desperate attempt to save Lee, paramedics rushed to his aid at 7.45pm and shocked his heart three times before he was pronounced dead at 8.08pm.

Lee's father was met by police and medical staff when he arrived at the pub and saw his son lying dead on the dancefloor.

He said: "I had a few moments with him before he was moved.

"Lee was a loud and lovely lad who enjoyed partying. He will be missed by so many people."

Police Constable Stephen Atkinson said there were no suspicious circumstances and, although Lee had a low level of alcohol in his system, toxicology results showed it had not contributed to his death.

Doctors could not determine the cause of death until they discovered he had an unusually enlarged heart, which was sent to experts in Sheffield for further tests.

Dr Laszlo Karsai, consultant histopathologist, said it was an "extremely rare case" and the heart muscle disease had not been detected before Lee died.

He said: "Lee was a ticking time bomb. It could have happened at any time and physical activity like dancing could have provoked the sudden cardiac arrest."

Family, including Lee's younger sister Chelsea, 15, and older brother Simon, 24, attended his funeral and paid tribute to the "fun-loving young man" at a packed All Saint's Parish Church in Market Weighton.
