WITHERNSEA has been given a £1m boost and residents are the ones who will decide how it is spent.
The town will receive the Big Lottery funding over the next ten years as part of the Big Local programme. Withernsea has been chosen as having been overlooked for funding and investment in the past.
Jayne Nendick, of the Southern Holderness Resource Centre in Withernsea, said: "It may be a cloudy day but the sun is certainly shining in Withernsea. It is about having a long-term strategy with the residents taking the lead.
"What we need is something that will create jobs long into the future."
As well as funding for improvements, each area will receive training and support from Local Trust – an organisation set up to deliver Big Local – to help residents spend the money.
Paul Armstrong, chairman of the Withernsea and District Chamber of Trade, said: "We should look to see if we can find match-funding to increase the funding further.
"It should be used to entice future investment in the area.
"I would like to see an investment in light industry, which will create jobs and more spending in the area."
Already this year, the town has benefited from the final phase of a £920,000 refurbishment of the Queen Street area, a £1m loan scheme to upgrade rundown streets and a £600,000 project to refurbish and combine the council's library and customer service centre.
Town mayor Councillor Kevan Hough said: "We need facilities which will be of a long-lasting benefit."
Details on how to apply for the funding will be announced in the near future.
