Gardeners in the village of Nafferton were left shocked after they unearthed a 2lb World War Two this evening.
The discovery was made at around 5.45pm at a grass verge close to the railway station.
A bomb disposal team was called and an inspection found the shell to be inert. They took it away at around 8pm to safely dispose of it.
Trains between Driffield and Bridlington were suspended as it was feared vibrations from passing trains could trigger the device. Services resumed at around 8.15pm tonight.
