Sky dancing birds of prey and acrobatic avocets

April brings dramatic action to our nature reserve at RSPB Blacktoft Sands with marsh harriers (birds of prey) performing dramatic flying moves over the reeds as they sky dance to attract a mate.  With up to 20 of these birds choosing the reserve, there is often constant action to be seen at this time of year.

As part of this performance, they also carry out the dramatic food pass, where the male brings in an item of food and passes it to the female in mid-air!

Added to this action Acrobatic avocets return to our lagoons for another breeding season.  These strange black and white birds with upturned beaks are fascinating to watch - they are always up to something , from feeding to chasing each other and their clute, clute calls just echo around the reserve.

Spring is one of my favourite times of year to work at the nature reserve with displaying marsh harriers, avocets nesting, bitterns booming and much more!
