Peter Swan: I'm convinced Hull City will step up a level in run-in

SO HERE we are. Eight games to go and promotion to the Premier League is almost in sight for Hull City. It's brilliant just to be able to say those words but now is the time when the heroes are born and seasons are defined. Every single game carries huge pressure and the closer you get to the finishing line, the more every contribution matters. As Steve Bruce says, this is the "tickly bit." Who knows what is around the corner but over these last eight games I'm very confident that City will hold on to second spot. They've shown far too much this season to make me doubt them now. Win five of the eight games, maybe with a point or two thrown in for good measure, and we will see Premier League football at the KC Stadium next year. Easier said than done, I know, but I'm sure Bruce's side has what it takes. If anything, I think there's still more to come from this team. The pressure might just be the catalyst to take them to another level. The Championship promotion race has been fantastic but we're slowly starting to see things become clear at last. Cardiff are pretty much there at the top of the league. It looked as though they might have been wobbling at one stage but they know how to grind out wins. It's hard to see one team overtaking them, let alone two. Then it's one from three for the other automatic promotion slot. City are in pole position but both Watford and Crystal Palace will still fancy their chances. Nottingham Forest and all the teams below have surely left themselves with too much to do given the gulf they'd have to make up over eight games. City's double-header with Huddersfield away and Watford at home doesn't need me to build it up. It's two very different challenges. First comes a bit of a scrap against a Huddersfield team still worrying about relegation today, and then it's a battle between second and third when Watford come to the KC on Tuesday. It's important to take care of the Huddersfield game first. I've seen them a couple of times this season and even with the improvements made under Mark Robins, they're not one of the strongest sides in the league. There's nothing intimidating about going there and if City play to their best, they win the game. However, leave one eye on the Watford game and Huddersfield will take advantage. The Watford game promises to be another cracker because I see them as the biggest threat. I've got a lot of time for Crystal Palace but they're an all-or-nothing team. One week they're brilliant and the next they disappoint. Even with the dip they've shown in the last couple of games, Watford have shown a lot of consistency since the turn of the year. They're the side I worry about most. That's what makes Tuesday such a vital game. Win that on the back of a positive result at Huddersfield and the Tigers' position would be looking better than ever. Watford and Palace had the chance to put a bit of pressure on yesterday but failed to capitalise, with a draw and defeat respectively. The best thing about City is that it's still in our hands. Win every game and we're back in the Premier League. It's really as simple as that. Watford and Palace will be praying for City to slip up and now it's all about holding your nerve. The team that handles pressure the best will join Cardiff heading for the top flight. And I'm sure that will be Hull City.
