Children's congenital heart surgery has been suspended at a unit threatened with closure.
Managers from the Care Quality Commission visited the Leeds General Infirmary unit on Thursday and said children's heart surgery there must be stopped immediately.
There are concerns about the number of deaths at the hospital.
The facility has been in the spotlight as it was highlighted as one of the units set for closure under a "re-configuration" of children's heart surgery provision in England.
Earlier this week, campaigners fighting to save it enjoyed a victory when High Court Judge Nicola Davies quashed the decision made last year on which units were to close.
The Joint Committee of Primary Care Trusts (JCPCT) said it would give consideration to the judge's verdict and advise people of its next steps in the process in April.
