Hull FC's attacking woes leave Gentle much to ponder

PETER Gentle says it is imperative Hull FC quickly get to the bottom of what is causing his side to play within themselves before it costs them further.

The Hull coach says he is unable to put his finger on why his players are not transferring their training ground form onto the pitch on match days after seeing Hull snatch a point at London in an 18-18 draw Gentle admits they were lucky to get anything from.

Hull remain in the lower half of the table and are five points off the top four heading into a crucial Easter after their draw at the Broncos following more difficulties in attack.

But Gentle is adamant his side will improve after fighting to earn a point in the capital.

"It wasn't until we had to chase the points that we looked okay," he said.

"We then started to get some shape and grew in confidence. I don't know if it is a lack of self-belief, lack of confidence or just trying to hang in with sides, but we have to get to the bottom of it.

"For some reason we are playing very conservative. We are not doing a lot of things that we have practiced.

"Obviously, a lot of the things we practiced we couldn't bring to the game because of the weather."

The Black and Whites needed a try from Joe Westerman and a 78th-minute score from Richard Horne to overturn a 12-point deficit at a rain-soaked Stoop, in a game that was low on quality but high on effort from both teams.

Standing water on the pitch, heavy conditions and persistent rain forced both sides to play within themselves, after a pitch inspection allowed the game to go ahead.

Still with only two victories this season, Hull picked up their second draw of the campaign after overturning 60 minutes in which London were on top.

"It took us a long while to warm into the game. It was horrible conditions and a horrible game really," added Gentle.

"It was very difficult to play in, but both sides had to play in it. A draw was probably a good result. We are happy. Those conditions are horrendous to play in so we are happy to get a point out of the game.

"I wasn't happy at half-time. We were playing conservative and a few things were said. We were lucky to get the draw but if someone had said before kick-off would I take a point I would.

"There's nothing to take out of the game because the conditions were so bad. The boys said they've never played in anything like it."
