POLICE are warning late-night revellers to be careful crossing Beverley Road after a man was hit by a taxi.
The 20-year-old suffered serious head injuries when he was knocked down by a black Hackney cab at 3.15am on Friday.
He is believed to have been heading north along the road, near The Bull pub, with a friend when he was hit.
He was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary in a serious condition, but was expected to be released within days.
Now, Humberside Police are warning drinkers and clubbers are "at risk" of being knocked down on the notorious road.
PC Keith Ward, casualty reduction officer for Hull, said: "Pedestrian safety is a huge problem in Hull.
"It is especially an issue in the small hours of the morning when roads such as Beverley Road are quiet and free from traffic.
"It's at these times of night that drivers who wish to speed excessively have the opportunity to do so."
He said the bars and clubs in the road added to the problem.
He said: "Beverley Road is a popular place for students and locals to go drinking at night, which means they're at risk of being on the other end of a speeding car.
"My message to them is to watch how much they drink and, when crossing the road, to use all the crossings available."
The warning comes as concerns mount over the safety of Beverley Road, which has been revealed as the most dangerous road in Hull.
Nine people have been killed and others seriously injured on the major road, stretching from Hull city centre to Beverley, since 2005.
Alarmingly, the road has been the scene for a sixth of the city's fatal crashes, according to figures released by Humberside Police.
Last year, a man suffered broken ribs and facial injuries when he was hit by a blue Renault Clio while standing on a pedestrian crossing in Beverley Road.
In 2005, four teenage girls were killed when two men raced against each other at more than 70mph on the road.
Flowers are still laid at the spot where friends Kimberley Brown, 17, Rachel Thomas, 17, Laura Hill, 16, and Karen Bunting, 18, died.
Beverley Road, which has varying speed limits, is among 27 streets in the city where fatal crashes have happened in the past eight years.
There have been 38 deadly collisions, causing 42 deaths, in Hull in this time.
Almost half of the victims were pedestrians, with more than a third of the fatal crashes happening between the hours of midnight and 6am.
Mick Harris, Safer Roads Humber's partnership manager, said: "People who are going to have a drink should make sure they have a responsible person with them who can help them cross the road safely.
"They should also try to wear bright colours, although this may not be desirable to late-night partygoers."
He also issued advice to people driving in the city at night.
He said: "You shouldn't drive as if it's during the day.
"You should be prepared for pedestrians crossing the road away from the designated crossings.
"This, in particular, is a major issue on Hull's roads."
Hull City Council's head of service for transport and asset management, Graham Hall, said: "The safety of all motorists and pedestrians is paramount and we all have a responsibility to make our roads safer."
