AN EAST Yorkshire MP is continuing to work in hospital, despite suffering serious injuries skiing.

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, is in hospital in France having suffered a fractured pelvis, a punctured lung and several broken ribs.

He could remain there for several weeks and be immobile for some time longer.

Despite his injuries, a spokesman from his Beverley constituency office, said: "He is working from his hospital bed and able to carry out constituency work as usual.

"He's looking at emails and letters on all manner of issues and is keeping up to date with his Twitter and Facebook pages. He was even posting updates on the Budget."

During a weekend break with friends in Chamonix, Mr Stuart was skiing down to a restaurant last Sunday when the accident happened.

The spokeswoman said: "He was skiing on soft snow, which turned into packed ice closer to the restaurant.

"His skis dug into the ice and catapulted over his head. He landed badly.

"It was a freak accident."

Since the accident, Mr Stuart's Facebook page has been inundated with messages from well-wishers.

The spokesman said: "I have spoken with Graham every day and he seems to be feeling better every day.

"He has been moved to the orthopaedic department and we hope his fractured pelvis will be assessed over the next day or so. We are not sure how long he will be in hospital for or when he will be returning back home.

"He has been heartened by all the good messages.

"As with anyone who is unwell, it really does lift his spirits."

Mr Stuart posted on his Facebook page: "Thank you all for your warm wishes.

"I appreciate them all and hope you'll be pleased to know that I'm in good spirits."

Minster and Woodmansey ward councillor David Elvidge said the accident was one of the main topics of conversation at Wednesday night's Beverley and Holderness constituency meeting.

"We all hope he and his family are coping OK and Graham is on the mend," he said.

"I think Graham is very inspirational and very proactive.

"Even laid in agony in hospital he is there checking up on business and the Budget and Tweeting away.

"He is making sure he is keeping on top of business.

"He's even sent me some details for a meeting in May.

"It is a serious accident and it certainly scared a few people when they heard about it.

"I just hope him and his family are coping OK."

Labour's Hull North MP Diana Johnson has passed on her best wishes.

She said: "I hope Graham is on the mend after this nasty accident on his skiing trip and that we'll see him back in the Commons very soon."
