OLYMPIC torch-bearer Janet Nolan will lead the Beverley Heart Walk on Sunday.

Hundreds of people are expected to join in with a charity fundraiser prompted by Beverley's status as one of 50 "heart towns" in the UK.

The British Heart Foundation status recognises efforts made by the whole community to combat heart disease through healthy living and exercise.

Mrs Nolan, of Longcroft Park, Beverley, has a gymnast daughter, Mary, with Down's syndrome and has long championed Special Olympics in Hull and East Yorkshire.

Her passion led her to be a driving force for health, fitness and sport.

She said: "I am delighted to lead the Beverley Heart Walk this Sunday and hope people of all ages and abilities will turn out to join us.

"I'm passionate about promoting sport and exercise for all, and walking is a great way to help keep your heart healthy.

"The British Heart Foundation is a cause close to my heart since my daughter Mary, now aged 20, was born with a hole in her heart.

"It's great to know our efforts will make a difference in helping to beat heart disease for good."

Mrs Nolan was one of only 8,000 torch-bearers nationwide and was chosen to carry the Olympic torch through Hull in June in recognition of her pivotal role in championing Special Olympics in Hull and regionally.

She is currently serving as chairman of the regional Special Olympics.

Her presence leading Sunday's walk is a welcome boost for organisers.

The Beverly Heart Walk is a free and fun, family-friendly 1.2-mile heart-shaped walk along the established paths and open space of pasture land on the edge the town.

The walk starts from Walkington Road at the western end of Westwood Road, which has views of Beverley Minster and the Westwood.

Online registration is now closed but people are still invited to register for free on the day from 9am, to start the walk at 10am.

Simon Barrett, British Heart Foundation Beverley Fundraising Group leader, said: "We are inviting people to join us to walk the Beverley heart.

"Not only will taking part help to keep your own heart fit, but you'll help the British Heart Foundation keep other hearts beating too.

"There's no cost to take part, but we would be very appreciative of any donations received on the day."
