A family had a lucky escape after a fire in their kitchen was only discovered when a parent went downstairs to warm up their baby's bottle.
The blaze was started when an electrical fault on the washing machine spread to clothing lying close by in the kitchen of the house in Mirfield Grove, east Hull.
The house did not have any smoke alarms and the fire was only discovered by the householder when they came downstairs and they managed to stop the fire from spreading before calling 999.
Fire crews from east Hull raced to the house and managed to isolate the electricity supply after the call-out last Thursday.
Richard Mason, community safety manager for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Fortunately, the occupier managed to stop the flames from spreading but this fire could have easily spread quickly had they not needed to come down to the kitchen.
"This really stresses the importance of having working smoke alarm fitted in the home."
Mr Mason said the family had been very lucky to escape without injury.
He said: "The fire broke out when everyone was sleeping so it could have been undetected for some time and the outcome could have been very different.
"Working smoke alarms give an early warning should a fire break out and I urge resident to ensure they have them fitted in their homes."
Smoke detectors can be bought from DIY stores and major supermarkets. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service ask residents to fit working smoke alarms on each level of their home and test they are in good working order on a weekly basis.
