THE family of a charity worker killed by a drunken hit-and-run driver say they hope he suffers a life of misery.
Michael Radford, 24, has been jailed for six years for killing Kerry Ockelton in east Hull.
He was drink-driving at high speeds when he stuck Ms Ockelton, 41, and her daughter Jessica, 15, as they crossed the road. He left Ms Ockelton dying in the road and her daughter seriously injured, fleeing the scene without calling an ambulance after causing the accident at 12.45am on July 1.
Instead, police had to follow a trail of debris from his car to his home before they could arrest him.
Ms Ockelton's brother Kevin, 46, told the Mail, on behalf of the family, they believed Radford would only serve half of his six-year sentence in prison.
He said: "At no point has Radford ever shown any remorse to us. He left Jessica unconscious on the side of the road to wake and find her mother dead.
"He never called an ambulance and tried to get away with it. In our eyes, he will serve three years for murder and attempted murder.
"My parents had to bury their daughter and she will never share the memories of her children growing up. We are all devastated.
"Our only wish is that Michael Radford has a life of misery because this is something we will never get over.
"She was a wonderful mother who loved life and it has been taken away from her. All she ever did was help other people.
"We would like to thank the police for their sincerity and humanity with which they have dealt with this case."
Radford was driving at speeds of up to 80mph and was twice the drink-drive limit when he knocked down the mother and daughter in Saltshouse Road.
He had been drinking lager at a party and when he got in the car, his friends begged him to slow down.
However, he told them: "I have had a few cans – I can't."
He then turned the music up before ploughing into Ms Ockelton and her daughter seconds later.
After the crash, he said: "I need to get away from the car and the cameras".
Jessica suffered multiple fractures was left unconscious near the side of the road until a taxi driver came to her aid. She spent ten days in hospital.
Her mother died at the scene.
Prosecutor Simon Waley said: "He was driving at speeds well in excess of the speed limit during the course of the journey.
"There is no evidence to suggest there was any attempt made to brake or steer away.
"After the collision, in which substantial damage was caused to the car, he didn't stop or make any subsequent report."
Ms Ockelton was a volunteer at charity Mind and worked for the Samaritans in the city. She had just qualified as a counsellor and was due to attend her first job interview.
Radford, formerly of Sykes Street, Hull, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed limit, failing to report an accident and failing to stop.
Radford's barrister John Thackray said: "Had he not been speeding, he would have been able to stop in time and he accepts that. He is genuinely remorseful."
Sending Radford to prison, Judge Michael Mettyear told Radford he had to be punished.
"A clear message needs to go out from the court that people who drink and drive and, as a result, kill people go to prison and that is your fate," the judge said.
"Had there been clear remorse, you would have stopped straight away but you carried on and you failed to report it.
"You were wanting to get away with it."
Radford has been banned from driving for five years and has been ordered to take an extended retest before getting back behind the wheel.
