PARENTS have launched a petition protest against police moves to raise the 20mph speed limit outside their village school.
Humberside Police want a 30mph speed limit outside the school at Fangfoss because they do not enforce 20mph restrictions.
Police say raising the speed limit will help them with enforcement.
But parents of pupils at St Martin's CE Primary fear the move will increase traffic speed on the route, near Pocklington.
They are also warning parents in other areas to beware 20mph speed limits are not being policed.
Parents are now urging East Riding Council to resist moves to increase the 20mph limit.
Parent Dr Eldon Spackman said: "I don't think most people know the 20mph speed limit is not enforceable so we hope people will follow the 20mph restriction.
"We are worried that increasing the speed limit would lead to an increase in traffic speed."
Mother-of-three Suzanna Dryden said: "It's quite a concern they can't enforce the 20mph limit – are they going to change the speed limit at all schools across the county where there is a 20mph zone?
"If a child were to be hit by a car at a slower speed they are more likely to survive."
Headteacher Paul Edwards said: "We are on a bit of a blind bend and the feeling is traffic is quite fast.
"The 20mph speed limit is not enforceable so people by and large ignore it.
"We are led to believe that at 30mph it becomes enforceable."
Humberside Police casualty reduction officer PC Simon Carlisle said 20mph limits are not enforced under ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) guidelines.
PC Carlisle said: "The reason for the ACPO guideline is 20mph speed limits should have road engineering in place in order that traffic finds it difficult to actually travel at more than 20mph.
"The majority of 20mph limits in the East Riding do fit that criteria.
"However in Fangfoss there is no engineering to support the 20mph limit, therefore vehicles can travel at considerably more than 30mph.
"We want to be in a position of enforcing a speed limit and the most sensible option is to revert it to 30mph."
