RESIDENTS are lobbying for speed bumps and a 20mph speed limit to slow down motorists in Ella Street.
Cars can drive up to 30mph down the residential street, which often has cars parked on both sides.
Anna Scott, a member of the Ella Street Residents' Association, said: "The council says speeding isn't a problem because of the narrowness of the road but that's nonsense.
"It just means when people drive quickly down here. It's more dangerous.
"Children can't be seen. We're concerned for the safety of children in a family area."
She said the rest of the Avenues have speed bumps and a 20mph limit.
Ella Street Residents' Association chairwoman Annabel Pir says many drivers cut through the Avenues down Ella Street because it does not have speed bumps.
Annabel says: "They choose to come down here to speed and they have obstructed vision because of the narrow road.
"If a kid's crossing, there's no margin for error."
She had a camper van written off when a lorry crashed into it.
Avenews owner Richard Spice says: "I see them zooming down there.
"It is a problem and it's likely someone will get hurt."
Alex Baglin, who lives in Trinity Grove, said an accident is waiting to happen because of the problem of speeding cars.
Ella Street resident Ann Hutchinson said: "We should be proactive rather than waiting for a child or a pet to be hit. One or two well-placed speed bumps would make a lot of difference to child safety.
"Hull has a good record on bringing in safety measures to help children on the roads, so I would think it would be a priority."
The residents' association has put its concerns to Hull City Council, which has said the cost to monitor traffic would be too much.
Councillor John Fareham, chairman for the Wyke area, said: "We require evidence for why there should be a speed restriction and speed bumps put in place."
The councillor, who lives in Ella Street, said: "They're quite expensive to put in. Is this the best way to spend public money?"
The council said members are not keen on supporting the campaign because vehicles cannot get up speed due to the narrowness of the road and parked vehicles.
