HULL: Yorkshire Water has been accused of creating "animosity" among residents in north Hull.
According to residents in Kingswood, the water company has gone behind their backs and approached people in Sutton Park and Bransholme to gain their support for its application to build a new pumping station.
Yorkshire Water says the new station, which could be built in Selset Way, Kingswood, will protect about 11,000 homes in the area from flooding.
Pauline Cochran, who lives close to the proposed site, accused the firm of creating a divide among residents.
She said: "Yorkshire Water couldn't care less what misery they cause to us and now they are looking to create animosity between us and other residents. We have said from the very beginning that we have no objections to them building the pumping station but not on our doorsteps.
"They are trying to scaremonger residents into supporting their application and have been going door-to-door to try to win the support of residents that will not have to live right next door to the building."
The original planning application was rejected last month but Yorkshire Water has since submitted a fresh one to Hull City Council.
It would be erected next to the existing site, with the old station being demolished once its replacement is fully operational.
Matt Thompson, of Yorkshire Water, said the new facility is vital for the community. He said: "A massive amount of planning went into this and we have explored every avenue with regards to the location of the new pumping station.
"The proposed location really is the most suitable and the new building will be much more attractive.
"We have worked very hard to consult with residents in the area every step of the way."
